Our Hidden Heritage: War, Migration, and the Transgenerational Transmission of Trauma

Wars and migrations have left deep psychological traces that go beyond individual suffering, shaping identity on both a personal and collective level. Displacement often disrupts the symbolic foundations of the psyche — homeland, language, and ancestors — creating a lasting sense of inner homelessness and a fragile ego anchored in adaptation rather than belonging.

These unprocessed experiences are often transmitted across generations through what Jung called the family unconscious. Trauma is not primarily passed down through memory, but through affect, silence, and repetition. Descendants may inherit anxiety, guilt, or a compulsive need for stability without knowing its origin, unconsciously carrying the complexes of their ancestors that were never fully integrated. In this way, the psyche remembers what history was unable to erase.

Yet Jungian psychology also emphasizes the possibility of transformation. When ancestral trauma is consciously addressed — through symbols, dreams, and narrative — it can be withdrawn from the shadow and integrated into the Self. What was once a burden becomes a meaningful inheritance, allowing later generations not only to survive history, but to individuate beyond it.

The aim of this initiative is to explore the unheard, hidden, and silenced stories that we inherit within our family systems. We believe these stories carry a quiet power that shapes our lives, and we seek to bring them into awareness and give them a voice — one that helps us understand one another with less projection and fear. This initiative continues the project “My Story from Silence” with the goal of conducting scientific research and publishing within the international Jungian community of the IAAP. We warmly welcome your participation.

The questionnaires have been prepared in various languages. Please complete them in the language in which you dream and think. If you could help us translate into any other language, please write to us at unheard.stories.we.got@gmail.com.

We are proud that the project is also financially supported by the Academic Sub-Committee of the International Association for Analytical Psychology (IAAP).
